Red Hat offers three types of Red Hat OpenShift implementations to meet the demands of organizations of all sizes:

Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform takes the same open source platform that powers the OpenShift Online hosted service and packages it for customers who want to deploy it inside their public or private data centers. Built with proven open source technologies, Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform helps application development and IT operations teams create, modify, and rapidly deploy apps on demand, with consistency and reliability.

Red Hat OpenShift Online is Red Hat’s hosted public PaaS that offers an application development, build, deployment, and hosting solution in the cloud. It allows you to write the code and deploy for a small organization or as a pilot for a larger organization.

Red Hat OpenShift Dedicated provides managed, single-tenant Red Hat OpenShift environments on the public cloud built with proven open source technologies from established communities. Red Hat OpenShift Dedicated is built around a core of application containers powered by Docker, with orchestration and management provided by Kubernetes, on a foundation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux®. Installed and managed by Red Hat, these clusters can provide additional resources as needed, use Red Hat JBoss® Middleware and partner services, integrate with an existing authentication system, and connect to a private datacenter.

OpenShift allows for the automatic build, deployment and management of open, standard, Docker-formatted containers.

Based on top of Docker containers and the Kubernetes container cluster manager, OpenShift 3 adds developer and operational centric tools to enable rapid application development, easy deployment and scaling, and long-term lifecycle maintenance for small and large teams and applications.

OpenShift is infrastructure agnostic and provides a consistent application development and deployment platform, with operations teams benefiting from unified container and cloud management capabilities. It was specifically designed to make the hosting of Microservices extremely easy, through the use of specific Application stacks offered natively within the platform such as the Apache Camel based ‘Fuse’ implementation.

Offering a choice of programming languages and frameworks, databases and development tools allows your developers to get the job done, using the languages and tools they already know and trust.

Developers can easily and quickly develop applications using either the web console, command-line interface (CLI), or integrated development environment (IDE).

The developer can push code to be built and run on OpenShift through their software version control solution or OpenShift can be integrated with a developer’s own automated build and continuous integration/continuous deployment system.

OpenShift then orchestrates where application containers will run and manages the application to ensure it’s available for end users. If you experience a surge in web traffic, simply scale your application automatically or allocate capacity ahead of time in peak periods.
